Challenging Course

Challenging courses are designed for women seeking a genuine physical and mental challenge. These experiences go beyond distance alone - they are defined by demanding routes, sustained effort, and the option of multi-night expeditions, planned carefully to suit experience, conditions, and goals.

What makes a Challenging course different?

Challenging courses are not fixed itineraries.

They are intentionally designed to be challenging through:

  • Route selection (terrain, elevation, exposure, remoteness)

  • Duration (longer days and/or multiple nights)

  • Cumulative fatigue from carrying a full pack over consecutive days

  • Mental resilience required to stay present and capable over time

This level is about endurance, adaptability, and commitment - not ticking off kilometres.

Types of Challenging experiences

Challenging courses may include one or a combination of the following:

Coastal Challenges

  • Long days on sand and exposed coastal tracks

  • Limited shade and sustained effort

  • Weather and wind as a factor

  • Multi-day beach and headland walking

Mountain & Alpine Challenges

  • Steep ascents and descents

  • Sustained elevation gain

  • Variable and exposed conditions

  • Multi-night alpine or high-country routes

Extended Adventures

  • Two or more nights carrying a full expedition pack

  • Consecutive long days on the track

  • Remote camps and limited external support

  • A deeper immersion in the experience of self-sufficient hiking

Routes and duration are selected after an Expression of Interest is reviewed.

How Challenging courses are planned

  1. Submit an Expression of Interest
Share your hiking experience, fitness background, and what kind of challenge you’re looking for.

  2. Have a conversation
    We’ll talk through:

    • Your experience and confidence

    • Whether you’re drawn to coastal or mountain terrain

    • Interest in a one-night challenge or a longer multi-night adventure

  3. Route & duration are proposed
A hike is designed to suit:

    • Your capability

    • The environment

    • Seasonal and weather conditions

  4. Investment & dates confirmed
Pricing and dates are finalised once the route, duration, and logistics are agreed.

Who Challenging courses are for

Challenging courses are suited to women who:

  • Have prior overnight hiking experience

  • Are comfortable carrying a full pack for multiple days

  • Can manage long days and cumulative fatigue

  • Are open to adapting plans based on conditions

  • Want to be stretched - physically and mentally

This level is not suitable for first-time overnight hikers.

What to expect

  • Long days and sustained effort

  • Time spent well outside your comfort zone

  • One or more nights camping in remote locations

  • Clear expectations and safety-first decision-making

  • A deep sense of accomplishment that builds over days, not hours

Investment & dates

Investment and dates for Challenging courses are confirmed following the Expression of Interest process. This allows flexibility around route choice, duration, conditions, and group capability.
