Mt Stirling

The Mount Stirling Summit Loop is a classic alpine hike that delivers a strong physical challenge without the exposure of higher peaks like Feathertop. Set among snow gums, alpine meadows, and wide ridgelines, this walk offers a true high-country feel with the added comfort and character of an alpine hut overnight.

This hike is well suited to women who are ready to step up from Easy courses and want to build confidence walking longer distances with sustained climbing and variable conditions.

Camping near Geelong Hut adds to the experience  - a chance to settle in, share stories, and experience the unique culture of Victoria’s alpine huts.

Day 1 – Forest Climb & Alpine Transition

Approx. 11–13 km | Moderate

Day one begins with a steady climb through forested alpine tracks, gradually gaining elevation as we make our way toward the upper reaches of Mount Stirling.

The walking is consistent rather than technical, requiring patience, pacing, and the ability to keep moving for several hours. As we climb higher, the landscape begins to open up, offering views across the surrounding ranges and a sense of being truly immersed in the alpine environment.

By mid to late afternoon, we’ll reach the Geelong Hut area, set up camp nearby, and settle in for the evening - a well-earned rest after a solid day on the track.

Day 2 – Summit Loop & Descent

Approx. 11–13 km | Moderate

After breakfast and packing up camp, we’ll continue the loop, walking across open alpine terrain and completing the summit circuit.

Day two involves a mix of rolling sections and descending trails, with opportunities to take in wide views before dropping back down into forested tracks. While still physically demanding, the terrain allows for a strong, steady finish.

We’ll aim to complete the loop by mid to late afternoon, wrapping up a satisfying alpine overnight experience.
