Lerderderg Gorge – Northern Circuit

The Lerderderg Gorge Northern Circuit is a challenging and rewarding overnight hike that feels far removed from city life - despite being only a short drive from Melbourne.

This hike follows a network of narrow tracks through the gorge, combining steep ascents and descents with river flats, rocky sections, and sustained walking. It’s ideal for women who are ready to step up from Easy hikes and experience a more rugged, technical style of bushwalking.

This is not a polished trail - and that’s part of the appeal. The terrain demands focus, resilience, and steady pacing, making it a powerful confidence-builder for those wanting to grow their skills and comfort in remote environments.

Day 1 – Gorge Descent & River Walking

Approx. 10–12 km | Moderate to challenging

Day one involves descending into the gorge and making our way along the river corridor.

The track is narrow and uneven in sections, with rocky underfoot conditions and multiple river crossings depending on conditions. Progress is steady rather than fast, with plenty of opportunity to practise good foot placement, pacing, and movement through varied terrain.

By afternoon, we’ll reach our designated campsite within the gorge, set up camp, and settle in for the night -surrounded by steep walls, quiet bushland, and a strong sense of isolation.

Day 2 – Climb Out & Circuit Completion

Approx. 10–12 km | Moderate

Day two begins with packing up camp before tackling the sustained climb out of the gorge.

This ascent is physically demanding and requires patience and consistency, particularly on tired legs. Once we reach the upper tracks, the walking eases slightly, allowing us to complete the circuit back toward the starting point.

We’ll aim to finish in the afternoon, wrapping up a hike that feels both physically satisfying and mentally grounding.
